Vancouver Sun Protesters turn out at Black Mountain trailhead Protesters who occupied a camp on Eagleridge Bluffs in West Vancouver for more than a month until they were arrested last week were back at it again Monday morning. Several dozen protesters turned out at the Black Mountain trailhead on the Sea to Sky Highway near Horseshoe Bay in a bid to stop loggers from clearing the route for a highway diversion. However, the loggers had already gone into the area, which is the subject of a court injunction barring protesters from interfering with work crews there. A small group held picket signs beside the highway, while several others went into the woods adjacent to the work area, but stayed away from the loggers. Police walked through the work area and spoke to several protesters, but made no arrests. Most of the protesters left by mid-morning, vowing to return Tuesday. A high-profile political protest last Thursday became the focus of national media attention after a series of arrests. Among the 23 taken into custody were former West Vancouver councillor Liz Byrd and her husband Ed; 77-year-old forestry-protest veteran Betty Krawczyk; Squamish First Nation elder Harriet Nahanee; protest leader Dennis Perry, a retired financial management executive; and former academic John Bannister, who drove himself to the police wagon in the electric scooter he uses to get around. The protesters were taken to the West Vancouver Police station and released on promises to appear in court on June 9. The Coalition to Save Eagleridge Bluffs is fighting a plan to blast a route through the bluffs as part of the Sea to Sky Highway plans for the 2010 Winter Olympics. It says the construction will cause major environmental destruction and argues there are cheaper alternatives.
