Court 'victory' may be too late in bluffs' battle

A sliver of hope still remains for protesters fighting to block a highway expansion through Eagleridge Bluffs.

The Coalition to Save Eagleridge Bluffs has been allowed to take their case to B.C.'s top court later this month.

Outside court yesterday, coalition leader Dennis Perry painted the decision as a victory.

"It feels good to smile for a change," Perry said. "We won a battle today."

But it remains to be seen exactly what the group has achieved.

Their next court date isn't for two weeks, while back on the bluffs, the construction firm contracted to build the four-lane extension behind Horseshoe Bay has been cutting down trees since Friday.

In theory, the wetland areas the coalition is fighting to protect could be gone by the time the group is back in court.

"We assume that the contractor will stop for the next 11 days," Perry said. "In my view, [continuing work] will be flouting the court's decision and showing disrespect to the province's highest court."
