Tree-huggers, naturalists and politicians to walk with Formosa Farm owners in Pitt Meadows Day Parade
Pitt Meadows, BC – "Ive never participated in the Pitt Meadows Day parade before, so I am naturally really excited. I hear it is one of the best parades in the whole Metro Vancouver Region," enthused Joe Foy, National Campaign Director for the Wilderness Committee.
Foy will be joining members of the Pitt Polder Preservation Society, as well as the NDPs Agriculture Critic Corky Evans, to walk alongside Formosa Farm owners Ting Wu and Risa Lin. Ting and Risa will be riding their tractor in the Pitt Meadows Day Parade, which runs tomorrow, Saturday June 7, starting at 11am.
Ting and Risa have been in a fight to preserve their organic blueberry farm from road building plans spawned by the provincial governments Gateway project. A new highway, the Abernathy Connector, is now being constructed through the heart of their farm, cutting it in two. The District of Pitt Meadows is currently considering pushing a second road through the farm, in effect cutting it into four pieces.
"The Wilderness Committee is proud to be in the Pitt Meadows Day parade, alongside these two courageous farmers. We are looking forward to working together with them and their supporters until they get justice and a decent chance to keep on farming at Formosa Farm," said Foy.
Ting and Risa have vowed to fight the second road and to stop it from being built. In order to keep on farming, they are pushing for an underpass to allow them to travel from one side of the new connector highway to the other to access both sides of their farm.
"We are looking forward to seeing MLA Michael Sather after the parade at the Pitt Polder Preservation Societys information booth. Hes been an outstanding defender of farm land in the district and wed all like to thank him for that on Pitt Meadows special day," said Foy.
The Wilderness Committees goal is to see a permanent boundary to the Agricultural Land Reserve legislated, and for all farmers to get a fair deal to allow farming forever in beautiful BC.
